How Much Does a Foam Sculpture Cost? The Factors That Set the Price

“How much does it cost?” It is the first question from anyone picturing a custom EPS foam sculpture: a giant logo, a character, an oversized object for a window display or a set. The honest answer is that there is no single price list, because every piece is made to measure. But there are specific factors that determine the price. Knowing them helps you set your budget and read quotes with a critical eye.

What the price of a foam sculpture depends on

Four variables weigh more than any others: size, material density, the complexity of the shape and, above all, the finish. Two sculptures of the same subject can differ threefold in price purely because of the level of finishing required. Let’s look at them one by one.

Size (and density) matter

The volume of EPS affects the material cost, but less than you might think: foam is inexpensive, and that is its first advantage over wood, metal or moulded fibreglass. Density matters more (measured in kg/m³): higher densities give more compact surfaces and finer details, and are chosen according to use. A piece that will be handled or placed outdoors needs more than a stage backdrop. There is no size limit, though: we build monumental pieces by assembling blocks that are milled with CNC machines and sculpted by hand.

The finish changes everything: raw, hard-coated, fibreglass

  • Raw or skim-coated: the sculpture comes off the CNC machine and is finished by hand, with no coating. It is the cheapest option, suited to indoor and temporary use.
  • Hard-coated and painted: a resin shell makes the surface hard, paintable and durable. It is the standard for retail, events and signage.
  • Fibreglass: lamination with glass fibre gives the highest mechanical and weather resistance, for outdoor or permanent pieces.

Moving up the range means more working hours and materials, and therefore a higher price: the finish is almost always the item that really shifts the quote.

Complexity and detail: the craftsman’s hand

A giant sphere and a human face are not comparable in complexity. Folds of fabric, textures, raised lettering, and thin or overhanging parts require hours of manual sculpting after CNC milling. Fidelity to a 3D model or a real product also affects the price, as in mockups and scale replicas : the more rigorous the reference, the more work is needed.

Why DIY often costs more

Cutting foam seems easy; achieving a smooth surface, an accurate shape and a finish that does not crumble is a different trade. The wrong material, an incompatible paint (many dissolve EPS) or a poorly done hard coating mean starting again from scratch. A workshop equipped with CNC, pantographs and proven painting cycles gets there faster and better, and in the end almost always spends less.

How to get an accurate quote in 24/48 hours

To quote a sculpture we only need a little information: the subject (a drawing, a photo or even just a description), approximate dimensions, where it will go (indoor/outdoor) and how it will be used. With these details, we reply within 24/48 hours with a price and a technical solution. In the meantime, you can get an idea of what is possible by browsing our portfolio (over 500 projects completed since 2004) or the pages dedicated to 3D signs and letters.
