The project
The centrepiece of the installation was a monumental gateway reproducing the famous bell tower of San Gregorio Armeno, the iconic street in the historic centre of Naples, known worldwide for its handcrafted nativity art.
The architectural reference is the historic bell tower of the church of San Gregorio Armeno, with its slender vertical form, string-course cornices, arched openings and decorative details typical of Neapolitan architecture.
📐 Technical specifications
-
Height: over 11 metres
-
Main material: high-density EPS foam
-
Load-bearing structure: multi-level modular tower system (tower layer type / certified tower scaffolding)
-
Reinforced structural anchoring
-
Use: outdoor installation
The location, close to the airport, is notoriously exposed to very strong gusts of wind.
We therefore designed an anchoring and bracing system specifically to guarantee stability and structural safety, incorporating:
-
Lightened volumes
-
Load distribution
-
Strategic mechanical fixings
-
A calibrated internal structural system
Throughout the Christmas period, which brought several spells of bad weather and storms, the structure held firm without any failure, leaving the centre’s managers fully satisfied and pleasantly surprised.
🎯 Result and impact
The scenic bell tower was not just a decorative element but the symbol of the event:
-
It made a strong visual impact from a long distance
-
It increased the appeal of the nativity scene area
-
It became an iconic photo spot for families and visitors
-
It strengthened the emotional bond with the Italian Christmas tradition
A concrete example of how monumental foam set design can combine:
-
Tradition
-
Lightweight engineering
-
Structural safety
-
Experiential marketing
When you are dealing with over 11 metres of height, constant wind and a strategic location… it is the technical design that makes the difference, not just the aesthetics.
